Dooars is the gateway to the hill of Nepal, Bhutan and
North East India. The area is famous for its natural
beauty and the most varied flora & fauna. The Gorumara
National Park, Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary and
Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary are worth visiting.
Gorumara National Park is located on the bank of the
river Murti and Raidak. The area has a thick vegetation
of riverine grasslands interspersed with Sevamoh
Woodlands.
Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary is more of woodland with
very tall trees and thick canopy
cover. The fauna of the
area include one horned Rhinoceros, Asian Elephant,
Gaur, Leopard, Barking Deer, and Spotted Deer etc.
Lowland bird species like Black Stork, Common Merganser,
Grey-Capped Pygmy Wood Pecker, Oriental Pied Hornbill,
Dollar Bird, Pin Tailed
Green Pigeon, Long Tailed
Broadbill, etc. Can easily be sighted.
Gorumara and Chapramari is two hours drive from N.J.P.
railway station and two and half hours from Bagdogra
Airport. There are some small and basic resorts at
Chalsa and Lataguri which is within 20 k.m. of the park. |
